What To Wear In Portugal
To sum it up - City smart – Beach casual
- In Lisbon and in other major cities like Oporto the locals dress in a smart, casual and understated elegant style.
- Our advice would be to avoid anything too revealing or you will get a lot of unwanted attention.
- Opt instead for a smart casual look.
- In the cities unless you are staying at a hotel with a pool, leave your swimming costume at home, as you are unlikely to use it.
- On the coast especially the tourist resorts on the Algarve - dress is far more casual.
- Shorts and T shirts are perfectly acceptable.
- We would suggest that you pack a smarter outfit for more up market restaurants and some great sparkly sandals.
- Jeans are very popular everywhere in Portugal especially with younger people but they are always smart and clean.
- Make sure you take comfy footwear for daytime.
- Take your heels, but save them for evening dining or night clubbing.
- If you are going to visit any religious sites, cover your shoulders and bare legs.
- Remember lots of sun cream and sunglasses.
- From November to March it can be cool and wet so pack a lightweight raincoat and umbrella.
- Dressing in layers will help you with the temperature changes.
